PR 13 Vereda do Fanal is a trail that crosses the high plateau of Paúl da Serra and leads through one of Madeira’s best-preserved areas of Laurissilva forest. The route runs through open green terrain and forest sections before ending at Fanal after four hours of hiking through one of Madeira’s most spectacular landscapes. This trail is also a part of the Madeira Crossing.

The trail starts on the Paúl da Serra plateau, at Assobiadores along the regional road. From the beginning, the path enters a wide forested area that forms part of Madeira’s indigenous Laurissilva forest. This forest type is endemic to the island and has been classified as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, and is perhaps the most visited site of Madeira, next to the PR 1.

Elmar Teegelbeckers

Passionate hiker Elmar spends months of his time on the trail. He’s usually on the lookout for hidden gems in one of his favourite countries such as Slovenia, Switzerland and Japan. He founded hiking-trails.com in need for a community and detailed information about the trails. Before this, he worked for the Alpine asscociation in the Netherlands[ (NKBV) but lost his heart to the trails.

Not long ago, Elmar published the book (in Dutch) Hiking Trails – best long-distance trails in Europe. With this book, website and socials, he hopes to inspire and shape an inclusive community for hikers all over world. No matter your speed, experience or level, you can get out there to enjoy the trails and connect with the heartwarming hiking community. Life is so much better outside and he hopes to inspire hikers to take their first, or next, step on the trail.

The Trail

Along the trail, you pass through an area known as Sítio do Fio. Here, remnants of an old cable system can be seen. This installation was used to transport wood and shrubs from the Fanal area down to Chão da Ribeira and Seixal, supporting agricultural activity in earlier times. You’ll see that these traces of historical land use add context throughout the walk without interrupting the natural character of the route.

Vereda do Fanal ends at Fanal, an open area known for its volcanic origins. Here you will find a small volcanic crater that has been classified as a Rest and Quiet Reserve by the Madeira Natural Park. The surroundings are characterised by old Til trees (Ocotea foetens), some of which date back to before the discovery of the island. The area has several natural viewpoints and is often used as a resting place at the end of the walk.

Best time of the year

The best time to hike the PR 13 is in the spring and autumn. Madeira is a good destination for hiking throughout the year. However, spring and early autumn are generally the best periods, as the weather is usually more stable for mountain walks. That said, rain and strong winds can occur at any time, as the island lies in the middle of the Atlantic. If conditions are stormy or poor, it is better to stay off the trails and wait for another day. Safety always comes first.

Safety & Gear

When hiking on Madeira, safety and the right gear matter. The weather is unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly from sunshine to sudden rain, as the island sits in the middle of the Atlantic. Because of this, you should always carry reliable rain gear, such as a proper hardshell jacket and rain pants. Extra layers are also important, especially in the mountains, where it can get cold.

The trails, and particularly wet stairs and levadas, can be slippery. Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, and consider bringing trekking poles for added stability. Finally, carry enough water and snacks. This is a long walk, and staying well hydrated is essential.

Difficulty

The trail is considered easy to moderate, depending on your fitness level and the weather. After rain, the paths and levadas can become slippery, so take care and wear footwear with good grip. Sneakers are not suitable.

Good to know

Because of severe weather, landslides, and the forest fires in Madeira in August 2024, several trails are currently closed for repairs. Authorities and trail organizations have indicated that most routes are expected to reopen around April 2026, provided the restoration work proceeds as planned. Please keep an eye on our Instagram account, where we are sharing the latest updates.

Also note that a permit is required for PR 13 and must be reserved via the SIMplifica website. As this is a popular trail, it is advisable to book your permit well in advance.
