The Drei Zinnen (German) or Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Italian) are among the most iconic mountain silhouettes in the Dolomites. The peaks, Cima Piccola, Cima Grande, and Cima Ovest, create the dramatic silhouettes that the Dolomites are famous for. The 9-kilometer loop to see the peaks is non-technical and accessible for most reasonably fit hikers.

The Dolomites have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, and the three peaks are visited by up to 13,000 people a day in the peak season. To protect the region, be sure to arrive early and leave no trace. It is also worthwhile to explore other day hikes in the region to combat over-tourism.

Elmar Teegelbeckers

Passionate hiker Elmar spends months of his time on the trail. He’s usually on the lookout for hidden gems in one of his favourite countries such as Slovenia, Switzerland and Japan. He founded hiking-trails.com in need for a community and detailed information about the trails. Before this, he worked for the Alpine asscociation in the Netherlands[ (NKBV) but lost his heart to the trails.

Not long ago, Elmar published the book (in Dutch) Hiking Trails – best long-distance trails in Europe. With this book, website and socials, he hopes to inspire and shape an inclusive community for hikers all over world. No matter your speed, experience or level, you can get out there to enjoy the trails and connect with the heartwarming hiking community. Life is so much better outside and he hopes to inspire hikers to take their first, or next, step on the trail.

The Trail

The Drei Zinnen circuit (or “Giro delle Tre Cime”) is a well-marked hiking loop that keeps the three peaks in view almost continually as you circle them. Most people begin from the Rifugio Auronzo (or through the toll road up to that point) and follow paths that link to the Rifugio Lavaredo, Rifugio Locatelli (Dreizinnenhütte), and other connecting ridges and saddles. You’ll pass a lot of mountain huts, scenic viewpoints, and dramatic rock formations as you hike. The total elevation difference is modest (550 meters), although parts may feel steeper!

It is also possible to extend the route to include the “Lakes of Piani,” or side spurs into the Cadini di Misurina area for extra views. There is also a multi-day variation: in 3 days, you can combine the loop with approaches and exits via Val Fiscalina, staying overnight in mountain huts to spread out the journey. The circuit is among the most popular day hikes in the Dolomites, where you have a blend of accessible walking with alpine scenery.

Best time of the year

The Three Peaks Dolomites Circuit can be hiked from May through November. This means that in the shoulder seasons, like May-June and September-November, there may be shifting weather, like light snow, rain, or icy conditions. You should come prepared for this with layers and good shoes. The trail should never be icy or unpassable in these months because so many people walk it every day, but it is always good to be smart, so you can enjoy your time outside in this iconic region.

Safety & Gear

The Three Peaks Dolomites Circuit is an easy day hike, but you should still be fit enough to hike for four hours straight. To prepare for the hike, you can pack healthy and nutritious snacks and enough water for the half-day you’ll be outside. You will also want to pack enough layers in case the weather changes and shoes with enough grip for the loose scree that the Dolomites are known for.

Difficulty

The Three Peaks Dolomites Circuit is an easy trail. While you will still hike up 550 meters throughout the trek, the path is very comfortable and wide to accommodate the many hikers who enjoy it every day. You will want to be reasonably fit, as you will be hiking 9 kilometers, which will take about 4 hours.

Good to know

You can access the hike by driving to the Auronzo Hut, where you can park (although it’s pricey!). If the parking is full at the hut, you can go to a remote parking lot, where a shuttle will pick you up to take you to the trailhead. You will be able to fill up your water at the hut, and there are plenty of options for food and photos there.

Keep in mind that this is one of the most popular spots in the Dolomites, so expect crowds (especially in summer). If you want a bit more peace, try to start early in the morning or go later in the afternoon.
