LOWA Maddox Pro GTX Mid Boot review

Publication date: 10 Apr 2025

GearShoes

Boots are one of the most important pieces for success on a hike. The LOWA Maddox Pro GTX Mid is a mid-height hiking boot that tries to offer a solid middle ground when it comes to the debate of whether to use a boot or a trail running shoe

It’s not as rigid as traditional mountaineering boots, not as light as trail runners, but something that does both jobs well. I took these out across alpine trails and glacier crossings in different areas in the Alps, and they handled it all without issue.

LOWA Maddox Pro GTX midTesting the Maddox Pro GTX Mid

Personally, I usually go for trail running shoes on long-distance hikes. I like the flexibility and the lightness they offer. But I also know when it’s time to pull out something more supportive, especially with snow and glacier crossings on the itinerary.

The Maddox Pro GTX Mid stepped up to the task at hand. On packed snow and loose scree, the grip held firm. On ice, they handled spikes well and gave a good base to move from. Over long climbs and descents, I noticed how the ankle support gave enough structure to keep me stable without locking my movement. That balance worked for me!

We hit sub-zero freezing temperatures a few mornings, and my feet stayed warm. The boot’s insulation didn’t overdo it, there was no overheating when we dropped down into lower elevations. However, it was warm enough to matter when the wind and ice picked up.

They dried fast, too. After a full day of melting snow and puddle crossings, I left them outside the tent overnight, and by morning, they were ready to go again. Not bone dry, but usable, which is usually all I need when I have a good pair of socks to go with them.

About the Maddox Pro GTX Mid

This is a Gore-Tex-lined boot, so waterproofing is part of the core of the boot. The upper section uses synthetic materials that help with breathability and reduce weight. The speed lacing system is simple and easy to adjust on the move, and it holds without loosening.

The outsole is LOWA’s own design, and it handled mud, wet rock, and snow about as well as anything I’ve used. It’s not an ultra-aggressive tread, but it grips confidently without picking up a ton of debris.

For comfort, it sits somewhere between a heavy-duty boot and a well-cushioned trail runner. The mid-height design gave just enough ankle security without the stiffness of a full boot. If you’re coming from trail runners, this is an easy transition.

Weight-wise, it’s light for a boot with this level of performance. You won’t forget you’re wearing boots, but you also won’t dread putting them on after a long break.

Conclusion

The LOWA Maddox Pro GTX Mid delivers where it matters. It’s a boot for people who want real support and insulation without gearing up for a full mountaineering experience. If you’re used to trail runners but know you need a bit more, this might be the bridge you’re looking for.
