The Norway Trail, a concept created by Travelbase Trails, is a 6-day trek on the spectacular Hardangervidda, Northern Europe’s largest mountain plateau in Norway. The trail leads you through diverse terrain, from the mountains through canyons with waterfalls and the famous Trolltunga. Norway is one of the most diverse countries in Europe. The Norway Trail is a guided group tour.

Hardangervidda, as said is Northern Europe’s largest mountain plateau, and well known for it’s rugged wilderness. This mix of tundra, alpine lakes, and ancient rock formations shaped by glaciers is the perfect playground for a hiking trail. Known for its reindeer herds and diverse birdlife, Hardangervidda never disaiponts. Trails here range from accessible day hikes to challenging multi-day routes such as the Norway Trail.

The Trail

To start your multi-day hike on the Hardangervidda plateau, you’ll first face an uphill climb, rewarded by stunning landscapes. Initially, you’ll pass through small mountain villages before leaving civilization behind. Look back as you ascend to enjoy the beautiful views.

You may spot sheep along the way and follow rivers, immersing yourself in the vast landscape. Pace yourself to save energy for the rest of the hike. Arriving at Vivelid, you’re greeted by a scenic river and can rest in the mountain hut or camp nearby.

The next day begins with breakfast and packing before trekking through varied terrain, with streams of drinkable water and bridges to cross. The path features rolling hills and leads to the Hadlaskard hut, where you can stay overnight.

Expect more stunning views, ascents, and descents as you continue, crossing snow patches and seeing the impressive Hårteigen peak. The day ends at Stavali hut, with options for indoor or outdoor camping.

On the final hiking day, descend from the plateau toward Kinsarvik, passing and admiring four powerful waterfalls. The path follows the river, ending the trek in Kinsarvik, where comforts like showers and a hot meal await.

The highlight, Trolltunga, comes on the sixth day. This demanding 8-10 hour hike starts early with a shuttle from Kinsarvik to Skjeggedal. After climbing to the plateau, you’ll have breathtaking views and reach the iconic Trolltunga rock. Alternatively, you can stay in Kinsarvik and explore the local area.

Accommodations

During the Norway Trail, you’ll sleep at the campsites or mountain huts at the end of the stage. The mountian huts offer some basic amenities like toilets and sometimes even showers. Sometimes even a small shop or restaurant, but they’re mostly very basic so bring all your supplies with you.

Best time of the year

If you’re hiking at the Hardangervidda you’re bound to the summer months. The best time to hike the trail is July and August, though it’s wise to prepare for unpredictable weather, including possible snow blizzards and strong winds even in these months. That’s why many hikers hike this trail with a guided group tour.

Safety & Gear

Hiking in Norway offers some of the best scenery on the planet, from glaciers to the most beautiful mountain trails. However, the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather conditions require careful preparation and respect for safety guidelines.

The most important thing while hiking in Norway is that you be aware of the harsh weather conditions which are also possible in the summer season. Snow blizzards or heavy rain with a cold wind are always a threat, so bring your hardshell layers and know how to deal with such weather.
