Cotopaxi Fuego Down Hooded Jacket Review

I took the Cotopaxi Fuego Down Hooded Jacket on my recent trek of the GR 131 and was very pleased with the quality and performance of the jacket. Initially, upon receiving it in the mail, I was worried that it would be too bulky or heavy to carry, as the down was so full and cushy. However, as soon as I pre-packed it, I was pleasantly surprised! The jacket packed down super small and is extremely light. In the end, my boyfriend and I both ended up taking the jackets for the trail, as they were easily the best options we had at home.

The Fuego Hooded Jacket is part of Cotopaxi’s signature Fuego line and is recognizable for its multi-colored stripes across the chest, offset against the solid base color. However, it should also be known for its super warmth and comfort. When on long treks like the GR 131, all I want in the evenings after exercising for 10+ hours a day is something cozy and not super thin or ultra-light, and this jacket is that.

Testing the Fuego Hooded Jacket

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Jacket gets it right. It’s both super filled and comfortable, while not being actually heavy. The jacket fit into my pack very easily and was light as a feather (pun intended). I am the kind of trekker who wants everything as light as possible while hiking, and then craves the comfort of something heavy and cozy as soon as I’m finished. Maybe not the most practical, but I’m a woman who likes to be comfortable. And this jacket suited my needs very well. It felt like I didn’t need to sacrifice warmth or comfort just for the sake of my pack weight.

The GR 131 runs across the Canary Islands, which means it can be very, very warm during the day. However, at night, the temperatures can drop down to close to freezing in the desert sections. The jacket was perfect for these nights and mornings! I was able to wear it with minimal other layers and was perfectly warm.

Cotopaxi was founded in 2014 with the goal of combining adventure with positive social impact. The company creates responsibly made backpacks, clothing, and equipment designed to inspire people to explore the outdoors while also supporting communities experiencing poverty. Central to its philosophy is the idea of “Gear for Good,” meaning that business can be a force for positive change by producing durable, sustainably designed products and using profits to fund humanitarian initiatives.

They even donate 1% of their annual profits to different multi-year grants for organizations that are doing good. If I’m going to spend a lot of money on gear, I’d rather that a portion of it goes to helping protect our environments and communities!

The Cotopaxi Fuego Down Hooded Jacket is super lightweight, as it is designed to be both a layer for outdoor adventures and everyday use. It is filled with responsibly sourced 800-fill down, which is what gives it the excellent warmth-to-weight ratio while keeping the jacket compact and easy to carry. The shell is made from durable ripstop nylon with a DWR (durable water-repellent) finish that helps protect against light moisture and wind. This combination of materials creates a jacket that is warm yet lightweight.

Designed with practicality in mind, the Fuego Down Hooded Jacket includes several functional details. The jacket has zippered hand pockets and interior stash pockets for small essentials, while the elastic binding around the hood and cuffs helps keep warmth in. The adjustable hem allows you to fine-tune the fit, and the jacket can be packed into its own pocket when not in use, which makes it easy to store during hikes or travel, if you’re not just stuffing it in to fill all the gaps in your pack, like I do.

pro's

Lightweight jacket with 800-fill

Great, ethical company to put your money toward

Many color options

Lots of pockets without adding bulk

con's

Perhaps too colorful for some people (although they have some more neutral options!)

A bit on the expensive side

Hard to find in stores in Europe to try on before ordering

Conclusion

I love the Cotopaxi Fuego Down Hooded Jacket. This has become my new go-to for all cool-weather activities, from morning walks to camping and everything in between. I am someone who tends to prefer more neutral colors in my gear, since I’ll end up wearing it with everything I own, but when it came time to pick a jacket, I am glad I embraced the color. It brightens my days and makes me feel like I’m part of the larger Cotopaxi mission and adventure.
