The Trail

Starting from the car park at the entrance to Gortarowey Fores, you’ll begin by walking through a forested area. The route is easy to follow, offering increasingly impressive views of the surrounding landscape, including panoramic views of Sligo Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. As you walk further, you’ll see the iconic flat-topped peak of Ben Bulben coming closer.

The trail winds its way through open fields and rolling hills. Maybe you’ll spot the elusive Irish hare, along with a variety of bird species. Depending on the season, wildflowers such as heather and gorse can add some color to the landscape.

As you approach the upper sections of the loop, the terrain becomes a little bit rockier. The views are now even more expansive. On a clear day, you can see as far as Donegal to the north. The cliffs of Ben Bulben are a magnificent sight up close. The sharp edges are really unique.

When you’re about to complete the loop, the route back allows you to enjoy the scenery one last time. While the walk is manageable in 90 minutes or so, it’s worth taking your time to fully appreciate the beauty around you.

This trail is perfect for those looking to experience the raw, untamed beauty of Ireland’s landscapes without embarking on a strenuous hike. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply looking for a scenic walk, the Ben Bulben Loop is a real treat.

The best time of the year to do the Ben Bulben Loop Walk is between April and September because the weather is milder. July and August bring the warmest temperatures, but you can also expect more people on the trail. If you’re exploring this area off-season, make sure you’re equipped for potentially tougher weather conditions.

Safety & Gear

The weather can change quickly and that can impact visibility. It’s essential to check the weather forecast before starting your hike and be prepared for a chance of rain, wind, and/or fog.

Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction, preferably waterproof. Dress in layers to adapt to shifting temperatures and bring waterproof clothing to stay dry in case of unexpected rain.

Good to know

There are three different loops, but the longest of 5.5 kilometers will treat you with the ultimate Ben Bulben beauty.

You can park your car for free at the car park that’s located at the entrance of Gortarowey Forest.
