MSR Hubba Hubba LT 2-Person Review

We’ve been big MSR tent users for the past few years, and when the Hubba Hubba LT released, I knew I wanted to try it out. Even after trying the FreeLite and Hubba NX Solo, my favorite tent from them over the years has been the Hubba Hubba 2, so a lighter-weight version was the dream.

I usually share a tent with my boyfriend, as my solo backpacking days are far and fewer between than they used to be. A 2-person tent usually does the job, but can still be a bit tight on longer trips. The LT 2 has fixed this! With more loft and a bit more space in the footprint, we feel like we’ve upgraded, all while keeping the weight down.

Testing the Hubba Hubba LT

We took the MSR Hubba Hubba LT 2 with us out on our GR 131 crossing of the Canary Islands in February and it held up beautifully. The thing about the Canary Islands is that you can’t wild camp legally, but sometimes you have to. For example, on La Gomera, the trail barely passes any towns, and there are no designated sites. So, it’s a bit of a grey area. That said, we camped our fair share. And in some areas, like on Gran Canaria, there were legal sites where we could really stretch out.

And stretch out indeed! Compared to the Hubba Hubba NX 2 (our other MSR tent in rotation), the LT is 11cm longer and 5 cm wider. Not too bad! We have tapered sleeping pads right now, but with all that extra space, we’re thinking about getting some MAX rectangular ones for shorter trips. The height is about the same, just a 2cm difference, but having the extra space on the sides and at the end really makes the difference. We can easily bring more of our stuff inside if it rains, without needing to lay on it like in smaller tents.

There is, of course, the argument for wanting a smaller tent and thus even lighter gear, but that was not our goal. Still slightly lighter (180g) than our NX, the LT feels like a real deal.

About the Hubba Hubba LT

The Hubba Hubba LT is a great addition to the MSR tents line up. It takes all of the greatness of the other Hubba Hubba models, and then makes it bigger, slightly lighter, and even a bit taller. Other changes are that the tent bag now has a roll top instead of the stuff-and-cinch design of older MSR tent bags, and vestibule material is now a white/clear color, which also adds a clean and spacious feeling.

The tent is about 1.36-1.54 kg (depending on if you take the bag), is 2.95 sq. m, and is 102 cm high. The poles are DAC NFL and are as lightweight as they come. The extra room means we can easily fit two full-size rectangular sleeping pads in the tent without any overlap. It’s got us so excited that we’re ordering a new pair for next season!

Conclusion

I think the Hubba Hubba LT is a great option if you’ve loved your MSR tent over the years and are in need of a new one, or if you’re looking for something in this price/weight range. Those are the two biggest factors to keep in mind here. There are heavier/lighter and more expensive/cheaper options on the market, so it’s about finding your sweet spot. When we head out for 10+ days at a time, I want something roomy and comfortable enough that we’ll be able to recover each night, without packing another few kilos on my back. This does exactly that!
