Hiking in Liechtenstein

Find Your Hiking Trail in Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein might be small, but it’s packed with hiking trails. The country has about 400 kilometers of marked routes, ranging from easy valley walks to high-altitude alpine treks. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed day hike or a multi-day challenge, you’ll find plenty of options. The best part? Everything is close together, so getting around is easy.

Liechtenstein is one of the world’s smallest countries, but it has a strong outdoor culture. Hiking is a big deal here, and it’s obvious with how well the trails are marked and maintained. Unlike more crowded hiking destinations, you won’t run into too many people, even on popular trails.

One of the most well-known routes is the Liechtenstein Trail, a 75-kilometer hike that runs through all 11 of the country’s municipalities. It’s not a tough trail, so most people tackle it in sections. However, it’s also possible to hike it in one go if you’re up for a long-distance trek. Along the way, you’ll pass historical sites, small villages, and some great viewpoints. The length of the country is only 24 kilometers, so this trail will triple that. Pretty amazing!

Best Hikes in Liechtenstein

If you want a real alpine hike in the area, the Fürstensteig and Three Sisters (Drei Schwestern) is the one. The Fürstensteig section is a narrow mountain trail with railings to help with the exposure. From there, you can extend your hike to the Three Sisters peaks, which sit on the border with Austria. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views make it worth it.

Another great option is the Liechtenstein Panorama Trail. It runs through the mountains above Vaduz and is a mix of forest paths, ridgeline walks, and wide-open views. This trail is a great way to see different parts of the country in a single day. You can start in Malbun, hike along the ridge, and end in Gaflei, where there’s a bus stop to get back to Vaduz.

For a strong day hike option, the Rappenstein Summit is a great choice. The trail starts near Triesenberg and takes you up to one of Liechtenstein’s best viewpoints. The climb is steady, but nothing too technical. On a clear day, you can see across Switzerland and Austria from the top.

Getting Around and Where to Stay

Because it is tiny and mighty, Liechtenstein is easy to navigate. The public bus system connects Vaduz, Malbun, and other key hiking areas, so you don’t need a car to arrive at the trailheads. Buses run frequently and are reliable, and if you’re coming from Switzerland or Austria, Vaduz is a quick trip from nearby train stations in Buchs (Switzerland) or Feldkirch (Austria).

For places to stay, Vaduz and Triesenberg are good options if you want to be close to restaurants and transportation. Malbun, the country’s only ski resort, is higher up in the mountains and puts you right at the start of many trails. There are hotels, guesthouses, and mountain huts in these areas, so you can choose based on your plans.
