Day hiking in Europe
Day hiking in Europe has never been easier with the many trail options for when you don’t have days to spend on one trail but still enjoy nature. The continent is well known for its well-maintained trails that can take you through countryside, forests, coastal cliffs, and mountainous regions such as the Alps and Pyrenees. Countries such as Switzerland, France, Italy, and Spain are loved for their mountain hiking trails, often with a mountain hut on the way for a food and beverage stop at the exact moment you need it.
The well-marked hiking trails often will take you past historical sites, old villages, and natural landmarks as well. Additionally, many European trails are also accessible via public transportation. Popular day hikes include Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo on the PR1 in Madeira, Caminito del Rey in Spain, and the Preikestolen in Norway. But also the Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain, is a popular day hike for more experienced hikers without fear of heights.
Day hiking in the United States
Day hiking in the United States is its own adventure. The many, many National Parks in the country make it a famous destination for day hiking. Popular destinations include the Appalachian Mountains, the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, and the deserts of the Southwest. The variety of trails is great for different experience levels, which means there will always be options for both novice and experienced hikers. Many trails have access to iconic natural landmarks, such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite’s granite cliffs, and the Great Smoky Mountains.
Accessibility is also a key feature in the US, with many trails near major cities and towns, and most reachable by car. Day hiking in the United States is a perfect way to see the many ecosystems and climates, from the rainforests of the Pacific Northwest to the deserts of Arizona. Some of the most popular trails require permits, which you should apply for, far in advance (usually 6 months in advance!). The most popular day hiking trails in America are Angels Landing, Half Dome, the Grand Canyon, and Mt. Katahdin.
Bring your essential gear
Proper preparation is essential, also if it is ‘only’ a day-hiking trail. This always includes wearing comfortable, sturdy footwear, carrying enough water, and checking weather conditions. Don’t forget to bring your essentials and always wear layers as temperatures can drop swiftly, especially when you’re hiking in the mountains.
