We are excited to share that our book, Hiking Trails, has been translated into English and is now available for pre-order in Europe, the UK, and the USA. The book will be available in February in Europe, March in the UK, and May in the United States.
Hiking Trails, originally published in Dutch in 2024, is a collection of 18 long-distance trails in 18 different countries in Europe. In it, you will find trails that are great for every hiker: from someone stepping on the trails for the first time to someone who practically lives in the mountains. This book has it all for the slow traveler.
Editor
Elmar Teegelbeckers
Passionate hiker Elmar spends months of his time on the trail. He’s usually on the lookout for hidden gems in one of his favourite countries such as Slovenia, Switzerland and Japan. He founded hiking-trails.com in need for a community and detailed information about the trails. Before this, he worked for the Alpine asscociation in the Netherlands[ (NKBV) but lost his heart to the trails.
Not long ago, Elmar published the book (in Dutch) Hiking Trails – best long-distance trails in Europe. With this book, website and socials, he hopes to inspire and shape an inclusive community for hikers all over world. No matter your speed, experience or level, you can get out there to enjoy the trails and connect with the heartwarming hiking community. Life is so much better outside and he hopes to inspire hikers to take their first, or next, step on the trail.
The English version of Hiking Trails will be available throughout Europe in mid-February and can be purchased on Amazon, as well as Bol in the Netherlands. These ship from the Netherlands, so they should arrive quickly and just in time to inspire you for some summer trails.
In the United Kingdom, the book will be available in March 2026, and you can pre-order it on Amazon.co.uk and at Waterstones. Plus, you can request it at your favorite book stores for them to order!
Finally, you can pre-order and order Hiking Trails in the United States on Amazon.com, and it will be available in May 2026. We are so excited for it to be widely available around the world. This has been our dream from the beginning: growing the community to include people globally who are enthusiastic about long-distance hiking.
The book was researched (i.e., we hiked the 18 trails) over 8 months in 2023. In that time, my friend and our photographer, Jochem de Jong, and I counted ourselves lucky to hike in some of the most beautiful regions on the continent. We knew we had to share the adventure with our community, and that is how the idea for the book was born.
The English version of the book is a bit different from the Dutch version, as this one is a hardback, slightly larger coffee-table edition rather than the paperback of the original publication. Because of this, the beauty of the trails really takes the spotlight, with photos and descriptions of Europe’s best trails front and center. The English version has also been printed as a part of the Slow Travel Europe series by our publisher, Mo’Media.
As an extension and elaboration of some of the trails that are featured on our website, the book offers more personal re-tellings of the trail, complete with the best side-quest sites to visit, photos of the people we met, and explanations of the history of the regions that don’t always make it into the online versions.
Discover Europe on foot
In Hiking Trails, you will find descriptions of our time on famous trails, like the Via Alpina that crosses all of Switzerland, and the West Highland Way in Scotland, but also on lesser-known trails, like the Camøno Trail along the Danish coast, and the Slovenian Mountain Trailthat runs all the way through Slovenia. In addition to these, the book will inspire you to hop on trails that will take you anywhere from the Lofoten Islands in the north to the southernmost tip of Portugal, across England, the Dolomites, or even on a tour of the Benelux countries.
This is how you discover Europe on foot, one trail at a time. Long-distance hiking means freedom. It looks like clearing your head by carrying only the bare essentials in your backpack and spending your days and nights out in nature. When you’re on the trail on a long-distance hike, you can gain a new perspective on yourself, your life, and even the world around you. This is the perfect way to take a real break and ground yourself in the nature and communities around you.
Prolonged amounts of time on trail can give you the gift of discovering yourself, both physically and mentally, but it can also simply mean enjoying good food in mountain huts, making new friends, or even sleeping under the stars. And sometimes, it can mean meeting people who may open their homes or tables to you just when you need it the most. It feels like trail magic!
In this book, you will find the most beautiful long-distance treks in 18 countries across Europe. They run through forests, over mountains, and along coasts. There are both short and long routes, ranging from very easy to strenuous. We believe there is something for every hiker on these trails, and hope you feel the same. Long-distance hiking and thru-hiking in Europe are one of the best ways to experience the beauty of our nature.
Our motto is simple: Hike Slow, Go Far. We believe that hiking, including long-distance hiking, is for everyone. Happy trails!
