In the context of hiking equipment, hiking pants are often overshadowed by footwear or outer layers. However, they’re still an imporant part of your comfort and mobility on the trail. Upon testing them, I’ve found that the Maier Sports Nil outdoor pants are a strong option for hikers because of their combination of durability, comfort, and functionality.

I’ve taken these pants on several hikes in different terrain and weather conditions: from cold mornings to warmer days on the trail. One of the best hikes I took them on was along the coastline on the brand-new Ziltepad.

Testing the Maier Sports Nil Outdoor Pants

Maier is one of the top hiking clothing brands in Europe right now, especially for hiking pants. They stand out as the right fit for every person, and I know from personal experience how hard it can be to find the right size of trousers. With their specially fitted sizing, you can easily check your perfect size on the Maier Sports website. Coming from a traditional company, I’m very happy to see that they make the pants that look good and fit well, as you don’t want baggy trousers when you’re on the trails.

My personal preference typically leans towards lightweight, flexible hiking shorts. But sometimes you need pants, and through my testing, the Nil pants didn’t disappoint. Made from Maier Sports’ mSTRETCH Pro 4 fabric, there is plenty of stretch and freedom of movement, which was particularly valuable when climbing and ascending steeper hills, so I could fully extend for the big reaches. The integrated flex zone waistband, along with the included belt, made it an even more comfortable fit, and there was no need for adjustment throughout the day.

I also really liked the temperature regulation technology in the pants. In chilly early-morning conditions, the pants were warm enough to be comfortable, while their roll-up leg function was useful as temperatures heated up during the day. Transitioning the pants into capri-length was great for immediate ventilation after I’d been hiking for a few kilometers. And while walking through wet vegetation and light rainfall, I also found that the dryprotec fabric kept the pants mostly dry. I was really happy that the pants dried overnight, ready for use again in the morning.
